The Ufton Nervet Railcrash
At around 18.15 hours on Saturday 6th November 2004 a train travelling from Paddington to Plymouth hit a stationary car at an automatic level crossing near Ufton Nervet. The train was carrying approximately 200 people and all eight carriages of the train were derailed. Around half of the passengers were injured, 12 of them seriously. Six people were killed in the crash, including the driver of the car and the train driver, another passenger subsequently died in hospital. More than 20 ambulances and 14 fire engines were called to attend the scene. Cranes had to be erected on site to lift the wreckage from the track.
